Myopia Management in Sacramento

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is one of the most common vision issues in both children and adults, and in many cases, it continues to progress over time. We offer personalized myopia management plans to help slow that progression and protect long-term eye health.

What Is Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. This makes distant objects appear blurry, while close-up vision remains clear.

It often begins in childhood and tends to worsen as the eyes continue to grow. Without intervention, myopia can lead to stronger prescriptions year after year, and increase the risk of more serious eye health issues later in life.

Why Myopia Management Matters

While glasses and contact lenses can correct nearsighted vision, they don’t prevent it from getting worse. That’s where myopia management comes in.

Slowing the progression of myopia isn’t just about reducing the need for thicker lenses. It’s about protecting your or your child’s long-term eye health. Higher levels of myopia are associated with an increased risk of conditions such as:

  • Retinal detachment

  • Glaucoma

  • Cataracts

  • Myopic maculopathy

Starting a myopia control program early can make a meaningful difference in reducing those risks.

Our Myopia Management Options

We personalize each myopia management plan to the needs and lifestyle of the patient. Your doctor will walk you through the available options and recommend the best approach based on your goals and clinical findings.

Ortho-K (Orthokeratology)

Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. In the morning, you can see clearly without needing glasses or contacts. This approach helps slow myopia progression.

MiSight® 1 Day Contact Lenses

These soft, daily disposable contact lenses are FDA-approved for slowing myopia in children aged 8–12 at the start of treatment. They provide clear vision while helping to reduce long-term prescription changes.

Low-Dose Atropine Eye Drops

Atropine eye drops, used at very low concentrations, are a simple, non-invasive way to slow eye growth in children. They’re often used alongside other methods for added effectiveness.

Your optometrist will help you understand each method and what to expect, including when results typically appear and how to monitor progress.

A Supportive Approach for Families

We understand that navigating vision changes, especially in children, can feel overwhelming. Our team is here to guide you through every step, with patient education, regular check-ins, and a treatment plan that fits your child’s needs and your family’s routine.

We’ll also keep a close eye on eye growth and prescription changes through regular follow-up appointments, so we can adjust the plan as needed.

Start Myopia Management with a Personalized Plan

The earlier myopia is detected and managed, the better the long-term outcomes. If your child’s vision is changing quickly or they’re squinting to see the board at school, it may be time to explore your options.
